Let your talent shine

By Paulo Araújo*

The new century has begun, the digital revolution is a fact, the market has changed and most professionals have already understood something crucial: if everything has changed, it is time to change as well. In times of globalization the most talented ones win. But talent is not a privilege of the wellborn, as many people might think, but something that everyone owns or can develop. How to let this talent shine and use it in favor of your career? I assure that you have a special talent that is about rise and, when it does, it will be a huge step ahead in you career.

Natural skills. You may find something easy to do at work that your coworkers have a hard time doing. It is already time to realize what you are good at by paying attention to people when they praise something you’ve done. Use your perception skills. Does anyone have to negotiate with a supplyer? Call John because he is good at it. Ops! An innate negotiator. Do we need someone to talk to people and solve a complicated issue? Call Jane because she is great at dealing with this kind of situation. One more talented person with leadership skills. Try to notice if you are the one chosen to solve any specific matter and use it for your benefit in areas that it might make a big difference.

Bet on diversity. Don’t be worried about having just one talent. Everyone is good at many things; therefore, don’t be frustrated if you can’t find that specific talent, a very special one. In fact, think about something more systematic. You must let all kinds of skills rise so that they can boost your career. It is not worth being an amazing communicator if you can’t work in groups, is it? That’s where diversity and the ability of using all your knowledge and techniques that can effectively make the difference lie. Think about it: which are your communication skills? Make a list of them. Which are your team work skills? And so on. That’s your educational and cultural backgrounds that will make the difference and not just one big talent.

Evaluate your career. Now it’s time to check if what you’ve done throughout your career was really worth. If you retired today, would you be entirely satisfied with your work path? The way you’ve led your professional life so far has brought you the results you expected? Are you the professional of your dreams? Be honest and face reality. It is quite common to take decisions that we don’t like but can’t be changed. Within my present context, which are the talents that I can let rise to make my career more exciting? Outline your own definition of success. Be sure that you are coherent concerning your values and be loyal to your point of view. As a consequence, you will prevent from frustrations and misunderstandings in the future.

Be willing to. In order to let your talents shine, you must be willing to study more and attend trainings that might help you grow and be ready for new opportunities. As a summary, there is a long way ahead; you must be persistent and willing to. You need to be focused to keep going ahead. Be sure that these new concepts can really help you at work. The way to let your talent shine is full of ups and downs; however, it will be an adventure full of surprises and successful stories. The important is to be willing to take chances and wake up for a new moment in your career.
